Thesis Projects (Bachelor's Thesis, Master's Thesis) and Practical Modules (Research Module, Practical Module, Project Module

If you are interested in carrying out a practical project (research module, practical module, project module) or writing your Bachelor's or Master's Thesis at our department, we would be delighted to receive an email from you. As we are currently still a small team and strive to provide intensive and high-quality supervision, we only supervise a limited number of theses simultaneously.

?

We expect to be able to offer further supervision from August onwards.

Current Topics

Topics for theses and practical modules are available across all of the chair’s research areas.

?

Our main topics are currently understanding and improving the?subjective quality of experience (QoE) and user satisfaction of internet applications as well as monitoring and analyzing network traffic for QoE and network security. We are currently primarily working on interactive web applications such as short-form video streaming (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, etc.) as well as augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR). In this environment we offer various topics for theses and practical modules, such as:

?

  • Traffic Classification and QoE Monitoring for Short-form Video
(The goal of this work is to identify network traffic of short-form video, e.g., via signatures or using machine learning. Additionally, important metrics for estimating QoE should be derived from the traffic patterns.)
  • Network Management for Short-form Video
(In this work, management mechanisms (e.g., bandwidth allocation) are to be designed that positively impact the QoE and QoE fairness of short-form videos. The effectiveness of the mechanisms can be investigated in simulation studies or in a testbed.)
  • QoE Models for Interactive Web Applications
(QoE models are to be developed for interactive web applications, such as short-form video or web browsing sessions. For this, subjective studies must be designed, conducted, and evaluated.)
  • ML-based Network Security
(The goal of this work is the design and evaluation of new algorithms for the detection of network-based attacks. To achieve this, ML should be used to learn baselines of normal network traffic in order to detect anomalies caused by attacks.)
  • Survey, Design, and Implementation of an AR/VR Networking Testbed
(In this work, a testbed for AR/VR applications is to be set up. For this, requirements must be specified and components selected, e.g., those already used in similar testbeds for network research. Based on this, a custom testbed is to be designed and implemented.)

If you are interested or have questions about writing a thesis with our chair, feel free to contact us via? email.
