Chair of Political Education and Didactics of Social Sciences

The Chair of Civic Education and Social Science Didactics stands for internationally visible, third-party funded research and for excellent, research-based teacher education in the field of social science education.?

It is involved in high-level European and national research and transfer projects, including EU Horizon initiatives, BMBF-funded collaborative projects, as well as in a long-standing cooperation with the Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung, bpb).
?

Research focuses on epistemic challenges in civic education, the implications of societal transformation processes for educational contexts, citizenship and the governance of civic education, as well as on digital and participatory approaches to inquiry-based learning in schools and in teacher education.
?

The Chair is broadly embedded in the international scientific community. The team regularly presents its research at peer-reviewed panels and organises international workshops and conferences. The Chairholder serves as Editor of the Journal of Social Science Education (JSSE), an international peer-reviewed journal in social science education research, and is currently Vice-Chair of the German Association for Civic Education (Deutsche Vereinigung für Politische Bildung, DVPB).

In teacher education, the Chair integrates didactic research with practice-oriented professional development. It aims to enable future teachers to address contemporary political and societal issues in a theory-informed, inquiry-based, and reflective manner, and to design learning processes that strengthen young people’s political agency, critical thinking, and democratic orientations. To this end, the Chair cooperates regularly with schools in the region and is actively involved in the Swabia Network for Civic Education as well as in other relevant local and regional initiatives.
