ZfK professor Angela Oels on Deutschlandfunk radio discussing COP30
Prof. Dr. Angela Oels participated in the UN Climate Change Conference COP30 in Belém, Brazil, as head of the delegation of the German Climate Consortium. She shared her assessment of the results in radio interviews with Deutschlandfunk (“Forschung aktuell”), RadioEins RBB (“Die Profis”), Bayern1 Schwaben, and Bayern2, as well as in two television appearances on augsburg.tv. Most of the interviews can be listened to in the media library (see links below). In the interviews, Prof. Oels emphasized that COP30 sent an important signal for climate adaptation. The 59 indicators adopted for operationalizing the Global Adaptation Goal would ensure that it would be possible to measure how well a country was prepared for the consequences of climate change. Indicators would identify early warning systems and planned resettlement from particularly vulnerable areas as success factors for successful adaptation. It is also particularly important that a tripling of financial resources for climate adaptation has been agreed. Only with financial support can the indicators be made usable for the Global South. Prof. Oels expressed disappointment that the roadmap for moving away from fossil fuels, which was also supported by the German government, had not reached a consensus.? Prof. Oels said that we cannot wait until Saudi Arabia also agrees to end oil production, which is why the establishment of a pioneering coalition is to be welcomed. Prof. Oels attested that the EU failed to set an example in the run-up to the negotiations, which meant that there was no tailwind for COP30. Many issues had to be postponed to the following year without being resolved. ?
