Doctoral degree
The path to the highest academic degree awarded by universities in Germany is achieved through the doctoral degree. In this academic qualification phase, the future holders of a doctorate carry out intensive research on a specific topic or project and then present their findings in a dissertation thesis and an oral examination.
?
The doctorate is a further qualification in the academic career through a written contribution to progress in science (dissertation) and an oral examination (disputation). The written work is supervised by a university teacher ("doctoral supervisor"). Supervision must be sought by the student him/herself. The traditional system of individual doctoral supervision is supplemented at some faculties by a graduate programme.
?
Graduates of a domestic or foreign academic university with an above-average degree at Master's, Magister, Diplom or state examination level (law, Gymnasium teacher training) as well as graduates of a university of applied sciences with an above-average degree at Master's level can do a doctorate. Graduates of shorter state examination programmes ( teacher training for primary, middle and secondary schools; standard period of study: 7 semesters) are required by the doctoral committee to provide additional proof of academic achievement for admission to doctoral studies. Successful completion of the medical examination is sufficient to obtain the degree of Dr. med. Further regulations for admission to doctoral studies can be found in the General Doctoral Regulations ( Allgemeinen Promotionsordnung) and in the doctoral regulations of the individual faculties ( Promotionsordnungen der einzelnen Fakult?ten).
?
The General Doctoral Regulations ( Allgemeinen Promotionsordnung) describe which conditions must be met to obtain a doctoral degree. The doctoral regulations of the individual faculties ( Promotionsordnungen der einzelnen Fakult?ten) regulate the admission requirements in the individual faculties. The professors in the faculties are the first points of contact if you are interested in a doctorate in a particular subject. If you would like general advice, please use the? general doctoral counselling service.
