Augsburg – The Faculty of 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】icine of the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Augsburg is still young, and the buildings that will form the medical campus in the future are currently under construction or are still being planned. Premises have now been rented at four locations that will cover the needs of the additional professors for their research until the new buildings are completed, and will secure the Faculty’s development process for the next few years.

When the Faculty of 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】icine of the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Augsburg was newly established in December 2016, the future medical campus only existed on paper; there was neither space nor premises. In the meantime, the first new buildings are taking shape to the south of the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 Hospital. However, it will be a few years until they are completed. In addition to the "former paediatric clinic" which has served the youngest faculty of the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Augsburg as a teaching and administrative building since the successful start of the model course in human medicine in October 2019, research premises are required for the numerous newly established departments.

In recent months, a significant breakthrough has been achieved through several rentals. The space requirements of the next chairs, which are yet to be appointed, can also be covered now, with more than 6,000 square metres spread over a total of four locations, so that the development process is secured for the long term.

Basic biomedical research in Garching

2,200 square metres are located on what is known as the Business Campus in Garching, where both office and laboratory space has been rented. This space is used by the Departments of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, as well as Physiology. A working group from the Technical 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Munich will also use the premises for the next three years.

“I am very pleased that we will be able to provide our colleagues from basic biomedical research with state-of-the–art research space in Garching this autumn. Joint use with the Technical 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Munich and the close proximity to the Helmholtz Centre also offer interesting synergy effects for research,” reports the founding Dean of the Faculty of 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】icine, Prof. Dr. Martina Kadmon.

Clinical and theoretical research in Neus??

In Gutenbergstrasse in Neus?? near Augsburg, a new building is currently being constructed in a wooden modular design, in which the Faculty of 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】icine has rented a good 1,400 square metres for the professors still to be appointed in the fields of 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】ical Information Sciences and Environmental Health Sciences. In addition, there will also be premises for clinical departments and working groups that do not require laboratories.

SIGMA-Park and BCM: 2,700 square metres near the main campus

The Faculty of 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】icine has already been a tenant in the SIGMA Park Augsburg since 2018. The offices of the basic research-oriented departments of the Institute of Theoretical 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】icine are located here in a space of 400 square metres. A further 400 square metres have recently been added in order to offer the Chair of Regional Climate Change and Health and the Chair of Model-based Environmental Exposure Science research opportunities in the direct vicinity of the university campus. In addition to offices, there is also a small laboratory workshop, e. g. for electrical and precision engineering work.

By spring 2022, almost 1,400 square metres previously used by Osram for research purposes will be converted for biomedical laboratory research. In addition to general laboratories, special laboratories will be available for working with cell cultures, for electrophysiology and for high-resolution microscopy (e. g. for electron and fluorescence microscopy). A laboratory animal facility (approximately 250 square metres) for mice and rats, which is necessary for the Faculty's research, will also be set up within the space of almost 1,400 square metres.

The research premises in the "SIGMA Park" will serve the Faculty of 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】icine as an interim solution until the completion of the ZeIT building, which according to current planning, will not be brought into operation before 2030.

Also since 2018, the Faculty of 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】icine has additionally been renting 500 square metres of space for the first professorships in the focus area 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】ical Information Sciences in the Büro-Center-Messe, which is only around 100 metres away from the university campus as the crow flies. The Departments of Biomedical Informatics, Data Mining and Data Analytics, as well as IT Infrastructures for Translational 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】ical Research, have their offices there.

The rentals are an essential prerequisite for the professors who have already been appointed to be able to carry out their research on site. For the first time since it was founded, the Augsburg 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】ical School is now also competitively positioned in the field of research. Its scientists are thus able to participate even more actively in supra-regional research collaborations as well as in the competition for national and international research funding, thus further enhancing the attractiveness and visibility of the location.
