A higher education entrance qualification can be acquired as a general or subject-specific qualification. Those with a vocational qualification can also acquire a general or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification.

Evidence of a German higher education entrance qualification:
- German nationals with a higher education entrance qualification acquired in Germany ( general or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification).
- Degree programmes that can be studied with a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification.
- Foreign and stateless applicants who have acquired their German higher education entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad (Bildungsinl?nder).
Under specific conditions in accordance with Art. 88 Para. 5 and 6 of the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act ( Bayerisches Hochschulinnovationsgesetz (BayHIG)?in conjunction with §§ 29 to 33 of the Qualifications Ordinanace ( Qualifikationsverordnung, QualV) vocationally qualified persons who do not possess a secondary school leaving certificate (Abitur) or any other higher education entrance qualification are able to gain admission to university.
