Emmy Noether Junior Research Group funding awarded to Dr Aisha Aqeel
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has awarded Dr Aisha Aqeel €1.9 million in funding for the development of a new research group at the ÐÂÍò²©ÌåÓýÏÂÔØ_Íò²©ÌåÓýapp¡¾Í¶×¢¹ÙÍø¡¿ of Augsburg.
Dr Aisha Aqeel has been awarded funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for the development of a Emmy Noether Junior Research Group on ¡°Spintronics with chiral helimagnetic insulators¡± at the ÐÂÍò²©ÌåÓýÏÂÔØ_Íò²©ÌåÓýapp¡¾Í¶×¢¹ÙÍø¡¿ of Augsburg. Aqeel and her research team will focus on the development of unconventional magnetic systems, referred to as helimagnets, and the optimisation of these systems for energy efficient spintronic applications. The term spintronic is derived from the words ¡®spin¡¯ and ¡®electronic¡¯ and refers to a contemporary area of research that offers insights for fundamental and application-orientated research, with its areas of application being quantum technology and nanoelectronics. The project will investigate helimagnets that offer tunability of magnetisation dynamics within an experimentally accessible range as well as the dynamics in a quasi-antiferromagnetic threshold. The main aim is to identify helimagnets with ultra-low magnetic damping and robust coupling to microwave photons. Researchers aim to achieve this through a deep understanding of underlying magnetisation dynamics. The research group will be based at the Chair of Experimental Physics IV led by Prof. Dr Manfred Albrecht at the ÐÂÍò²©ÌåÓýÏÂÔØ_Íò²©ÌåÓýapp¡¾Í¶×¢¹ÙÍø¡¿ of Augsburg. Since 2022, Aqeel has been a junior research group leader at the Munich Centre for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST) at the Technical ÐÂÍò²©ÌåÓýÏÂÔØ_Íò²©ÌåÓýapp¡¾Í¶×¢¹ÙÍø¡¿ of Munich (TUM). She therefore brings valuable expertise to the new project in Augsburg. Originally from Pakistan, Aqeel completed her master¡¯s degree in nanoscience at the ÐÂÍò²©ÌåÓýÏÂÔØ_Íò²©ÌåÓýapp¡¾Í¶×¢¹ÙÍø¡¿ of Groningen in the Netherlands in 2012. In 2017, she received a doctorate from the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials at the ÐÂÍò²©ÌåÓýÏÂÔØ_Íò²©ÌåÓýapp¡¾Í¶×¢¹ÙÍø¡¿ of Groningen in the Netherlands on the topic of complex spin systems. From 2017 to 2018, she conducted postdoctoral research at the ÐÂÍò²©ÌåÓýÏÂÔØ_Íò²©ÌåÓýapp¡¾Í¶×¢¹ÙÍø¡¿ of Regensburg, which was followed by her role at the Technical ÐÂÍò²©ÌåÓýÏÂÔØ_Íò²©ÌåÓýapp¡¾Í¶×¢¹ÙÍø¡¿ of Munich (TUM).
