2026 Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize for mathematician Dominik Schmid

Award recognises outstanding contributions to stochastics

The 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Augsburg is delighted to announce an outstanding honour for one of its early-career researchers: Assistant Professor Dr Dominik Schmid has been awarded the 2026 Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize, regarded as Germany’s most prestigious award for researchers in the early stages of their careers. This was announced by the Executive Board of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) on 26 March 2026 in Bonn.

The prize comes with a cash award of 200,000 euros, which can be used flexibly for further research over a period of up to three years. A total of ten scientists were selected this year from 156 nominees. The award ceremony will take place on 11 June 2026 in Berlin.

Groundbreaking work in probability theory

Dominik Schmid is being honoured for his groundbreaking work in the field of probability theory. His research focuses on so-called exclusion processes, which enable a unified mathematical modelling of transport phenomena. These play a central role both in scientific research and in everyday applications – for example, in road traffic or the spread of diseases. Furthermore, through the creative combination of ideas from various fields of mathematics, Schmid contributes to the further development of modern probability theory as a whole.

“It was with great delight that I was surprised, whilst on my current research trip to the USA, by the news that I had been awarded the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize. I intend to use the prize money specifically to further my research work at the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Augsburg, in particular to expand my research group by supporting PhD students,” says Dominik Schmid, who hails from Neuburg an der Donau. He is currently on a research trip in California (Stanford and Berkeley) and is expected to return to the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Augsburg after Easter.

The 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Augsburg warmly congratulates Assistant Professor Dr Dominik Schmid on this significant award and sees it as confirmation of his excellent research achievements and the high quality of support for early-career researchers at the institution.
