Industrial Engineering (M.Sc.)
Study content:
The Augsburg Master's degree programme in Industrial Engineering teaches competencies in natural and economic sciences, concepts and methods for shaping a future-oriented, sustainable society. It is aimed at students who have completed a bachelor's degree programme in economics, natural sciences, engineering or industrial engineering.
?
Through the possibility of an individual focus, students can design their own study programme.
?
In terms of content, the Master's degree course, which is designed for a standard period of study of four semesters, is divided into the “Resource Efficiency and Strategy” section, which is compulsory for all students and represents a key element of the course. The aim of this part of the course is to create a basis for decision-making and action to evaluate new products, processes or technologies by identifying and analyzing the spatio-temporal interdependencies of resource flows, taking into account ecology, economics and social issues.
In the specialization area, students can choose whether they want to deepen their knowledge in the economics-oriented area of “Management and Sustainability” or focus more on the technology-oriented area of “Materials Engineering”. The other area is chosen as a minor subject. When specializing in “Management and Sustainability”, the focus is on financial and production management issues such as the analysis of raw material prices, the techno-economic evaluation of investment decisions, the determination of price models for energy services or the design of closed-loop supply chains. At a methodological level, advanced concepts of operations research are taught comprehensively.
?
A specialization in “Materials Engineering” focuses on the design and development of innovative structural materials, in particular functionally integrated materials and fibre composites as well as sustainable material and energy cycles. Students learn analytical methods for the characterization of primary and secondary raw materials, materials and components as well as methods of sustainability and environmental assessment and understand the functioning of waste management systems on an organizational, legal and technical level.
The fourth semester is reserved for the Master's thesis, which can be written either at the university's chairs and professorships or at industrial companies or research institutions such as the DLR Center for Lightweight Production Technology, the Fraunhofer Institute for Foundry, Composite and Processing Technology and the bifa Environmental Institute.

Career prospects:
- Management positions in science/business/administration: sustainability management; material development/-characterization/-testing; waste and recycling management; transport and logistics industry; management consultancy; project management; production & supply chain management
- doctorate at the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Augsburg or other universities in Germany or abroad.
Special features
Compared to other Master's degrees in industrial engineering, the Augsburg course is characterized by its focus on fibre composites, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in production and the design of sustainable value creation networks. The involvement of lecturers from subjects that are not typically industrial engineering subjects, such as chemistry or environmental technology, gives students in-depth insights into these economic sectors, e.g. in the form of laboratory exercises and industry excursions. Graduates of the Master's degree programme are able to use advanced methods to contribute to solving the complex challenges of the transformation towards digitalization and a sustainable economy and society.
The strong regional network with companies and research institutions (e.g. the German Aerospace Center, the bifa Environmental Institute or the Fraunhofer Institute for Foundry, Composite and Processing Technology) enables graduates to enter professional life in the region after graduation or to take up a working student position during their studies.
