EMAS - Environmental Management System

The 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Augsburg is currently implementing an environmental management system in accordance with the European EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) standard. The aim is to address environmental and sustainability issues in a systematic, transparent, and results-oriented manner across all sectors, from energy management and biodiversity to the mapping of the SDGs. The EMAS certification is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

?

The implementation is being led by an interdisciplinary team under the direction of the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 Chancellor. Dr Sandra K?hler, Head of the Green Office, has been appointed Environmental Management Officer. The process is supported by the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】’s Green Transformation Representative.

?

What is EMAS?

EMAS is a voluntary environmental management system established by the European Union. It enables organisations to continuously improve their environmental performance.

?EMAS is based on:

  • the systematic recording and evaluation of all environmental aspects of an organisation,
  • a legally compliant and practical management approach, and
  • regular external audits and transparent reporting.

While EMAS is compatible with other management systems such as ISO 14001, it goes significantly further in its requirements for transparency, employee participation, and public accountability.

Why do we use EMAS?

The 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Augsburg views sustainability as a key responsibility for the future – scientifically, institutionally, and socially. By introducing EMAS, the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 aims to systematically integrate sustainability into all areas of campus life – not only as a guiding principle, but as an integral part of everyday practice.

?

In particular, EMAS supports:

???? the implementation of the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】's sustainability strategy,

???? compliance with legal requirements (e.g. energy reporting obligations),

???? the climate targets of the Free State of Bavaria and the Federal Government, and

??? ?embedding of eological responsibility into university operations.

What are the advantages of EMAS?

The introduction of an EMAS system is not bureaucracy for its own sake. Instead, it provides a framework:

???? Structure: clear responsibilities, measurable goals, and continuous improvement

???? Transparency: regular environmental reporting, fostering internal and external trust

???? Legal certainty: overview of environmental requirements and documentation for funding programmes

???? Synergies: networking of sustainability initiatives and better use of existing resources

???? Visibility: EMAS is a recognised mark of quality in sustainable organisational development

???? Motivation: EMAS thrives on participation – across faculties, departments and disciplines

EMAS provides orientation in complex situations and helps to enhance the positive impact of the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】?s actions.

How does the introduction of EMAS work?

The introduction of EMAS takes place in several stages:

  1. Inventory: Survey of all relevant environmental aspects (energy, mobility, space, etc.)
  2. Environmental statement and objectives: Development of an environmental programme with defined targets
  3. Integration into the organisation: Establishment of a continuous improvement process (CIP)
  4. Internal training and participation: Informations and participation opportunities for all areas
  5. External audit: Independent environmental verifiers validate the system and the environmental statement
  6. Certification and publication: Initial certification is planned for the end of 2026

The process is based on the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】's sustainability strategy, which serves as an overarching framework and defines the institution?s strategic goals.

EMAS as part of the sustainability strategy

The introduction of the EMAS environmental management system is a key element of the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 of Augsburg's sustainability strategy, adopted in December 2024. The strategy provides the overarching framework for all initiatives within the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】?s green transformation – across research, teaching and campus operations. It also serves as a guiding position paper for the implementation of EMAS.

The 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】 understands sustainability as an ethical principle that guids both its structures and actions. Thisunderstanding encompasses not only environmental and climate protection, but also social justice, economic responsibility and the promotion of biodiversity – in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

EMAS is a practical tool for implementing these goals in a systematic, verifiable and practical way – making the 新万博体育下载_万博体育app【投注官网】's commitment to sustainability both visible and measurable in everyday life.
