Mobility and migration have gained central importance in the livelihoods of rural high-mountain communities in the Karakorum-Himalaya region. To acquire higher education and engage in professional employment, increasing numbers of people have moved out of their native valleys and temporarily or permanently resettled in urban centers. Being part of the Competence Network ?Crossroads Asia“ , funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the project component “Pathways to Knowledge: Structures, flows and dynamics in networks of education migration from the Karakorum-Himalaya region” inquires into the mobility strategies in high-mountain communities of Gojal in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan and of the Kumaon Himalaya in Uttarakhand, India. Special focus is paid to the translocal social networks emerging from ongoing mobility and migration and the implications of intensifying multi-local linkages, translocal support and remittances for processes of socio-economic development and change in these increasingly translocal communities. The project component “Socio-spatial transformation in trade and education migration hubs: the relational constitution of the local” , running since 2015, focuses on the role which intersections of flows, interactions and networks of people, objects and ideas play in the production and constitution of place(s).
